I first met Simon many years ago whilst working at Credit Suisse, and got to know him outside of work also. At work he was loved by his team, and did more to foster junior talent in IT at Credit Suisse than anybody I know. But for me, there are three things I will always remember fondly about Simon. Firstly, his encyclopaedic memory of 80s & 90s pop lyrics. Many a time we would be having a chat about something, or working through some problem, when the conversation would turn into a lyric-quoting battle. I’m not sure that improved the quality of the discussion, but it made it way more fun! Secondly, he was incredibly active – walking, running, cycling, sailing, kayaking and more besides I’m sure. I cycled a few times with Simon – he would always beat me up the hills, and I would win downhill. I think this may be weight related … Thirdly, Simon was somebody who took pleasure in making things and fixing things – an increasing rarity in the modern world of instant gratification and disposable fashion. He repaired his punctured inner tubes. He kitted out his shed with a sofa & sounds (to learn more 80s lyrics maybe!) And anyone who uses the feet of an office chair as a sand anchor whilst fishing from a kayak in the sea off the Isle of Grain is pretty heroic in my opinion. I will miss Simon’s sense of humour, his calm nature, and his logical approach to life. I’ll even miss his smelly kit being hung over chairs and monitors in the office after a run or cycle! Goodbye Simon my friend. My thoughts are with Caroline, Sophie & Daniel at this difficult time.
