Matt 30th August 2022

I first met Simon on our first day at Newcastle University. Simon was studying something clever and techie, had a PC and even more impressive BT was paying him to be there. Of course, I soon learned that Simon liked to look after his money rather than flash it around. We discovered a mutual interest in music and student life – I think secretly Simon admired my relatively wilder lifestyle and likewise I respected Simon's more controlled approach. We provided balance for each other. When Simon met Caroline we also became good friends. Our friendship continued to grow throughout Uni with many nights out as described on these pages by Ken and Jase, some memorable and some we struggled to remember. We did Glastonbury in 95 and then a couple of years later I moved to London and Simon becomes my landlord (more money for Simon 😊). Simon didn’t need to do it, but I knew Simon would offer – a very generous gesture which was much appreciated and made relocating easy. With Craig, we had a great time at Cranworth Gardens, including clubbing nights with Caroline (not Simon’s scene). We both decided to get married around the same time and asked each other to be our 'Best Man'. It was typical of our friendship and personalities – mutual respect and practical (we could organise our own Stag weekends knowing we look after each other). Life moved on and we continued to visit each other and witnessing our children grow up, as our lives became busier our friendship inadvertently moved online always with the intention of catching up soon. We had dinner together a few years when I was in London, a rare moment with just the two of us and it felt just like all those years ago. I will really miss you I’m sorry Abi and I haven’t been in contact that much in recent times. Our thoughts and condolences are with Caroline, Sophie & Daniel and family.
